The Agenda

Introductions

First up, let’s get to know each other. We’ll do introductions, learn about why we are here and how we are feeling. Hopefully you’ll leave with new found knowledge and a new pal to ride with. We’ll be asking you to scale your confidence in bike mechanics from 1 - 10. 1 being “eeeerrm, what’s a wheel?” to 10 “I once had an issue whilst I was touring so I sourced all new parts and built a new bike”

What’s that part called?

After intros, let’s learn the names of bike parts. It can get confusing so you’ll be working in groups to label parts of a bike.

“M” Check

An “M” check allows you to identify any safety issues on your bike. When you get this skill down, you can do an “M” check in 60 seconds. We will be taking our time, learning the “M” check step by step and repeating it so that the knowledge is truly embedded.

The safer the bike, the more you can shred the gnar 🤟

Dinner

After the M check, we will pause for dinner. A delicious plant based dinner of Caponata, a Sicilian sweet n sour aubergine stew & a sun-dried tomato & black olive quinoa ‘tabouleh’ will be served from @greenlabelkitchen

Punctures

For those running tubes, we will demonstrate how to remove your wheel and tyre, identify the cause of the puncture, fix it and replace your wheel and tyre.

For those running tubeless, we will demonstrate how to use a plug and how to deal with a slashed tyre.

Everyone will have time to practise this on their bikes, multiple times.

Round up and debrief

The evening will end with a debrief. We’ll ask you to share any ‘light bulb moments’ with the group and invite you to make a commitment that will progress your learning beyond the workshop.

What you need to bring

Puncture repair kit

3 Tyre levers

Spare inner tube

Pump

Whatever else you carry tool wise

Don’t worry if you don’t have these items, just bring yourself and your bike!

Hey leaders of WTFNB led bike spaces 👋🏻

Please feel free to use this format for your own M Check and Puncture Workshops.

Here you can find a google sheet with the name of bike parts to use in the first activity. We cut ours out and laminated them to use in future evenings.

If you have any suggestions for how we can improve this workshop or if you would like to share your own format, please do! 🙏 You can get us at newforestoffroadclub@gmail.com
